Local Church Giving Away $50,000

(Calgary, AB) At a time of economic uncertainty when many non-profits and charities are finding it difficult to make ends meet, a local church has decided to give away $50,000.  On April 17 and 18, RockPointe Church is giving away a total of $50,000 in amounts of $500, $750 and $1000 to groups of 10-12 people as part of their Compassion in Action:  Stop the Traffic initiative.

“This is about empowerment,” says Kirk Cowman, Project Leader of Compassion in Action:  Stop the Traffic.  “We want to empower people everywhere to make a difference, to be a voice for the powerless in the world, and to help victims and those at risk of Human Trafficking.”

With over 27 million people currently living in slavery due to Human Trafficking and annual revenues of more than $31 billion, the United Nations reports that Human Trafficking is reaching epidemic proportions.  Compassion in Action:  Stop the Traffic is an initiative focused on helping victims and those at risk of Human Trafficking in the Ukraine, Ethiopia, Cambodia, Costa Rica and in Calgary, Alberta.

RockPointe Church is inviting people from every walk of life to get together with their family and friends and form Compassion in Action groups.  A Compassion in Action group comes together to accomplish two goals: to increase awareness and to raise funds to help victims and those at risk of Human Trafficking.

“You don’t have to attend RockPointe to be a part of what is happening,” says Cowman. “You just have to form a group, commit to the two Compassion in Action goals and we will give you money to help accomplish those goals.”   As of Tuesday over 500 people, making up over 50 groups, had signed up to be a part of Compassion in Action and that number continues to grow.

Three years ago, RockPointe Church did something similar with Compassion in Action:  More than Words.  In 2007, $50,000 was divided between 73 groups of 10-12 people.  The 73 groups were asked to raise awareness and raise funds to help victims of HIV/AIDS and extreme poverty.   Compassion in Action groups held garage sales, threw dinner parties, wrote letters to their friends, sold t-shirts and one group even held a high-end car show with Ferrari’s and Lamborghini’s.  At the end of 8 weeks, over $500,000 was returned and used to fund projects in Niger, Malawi, Cambodia and Papua, Indonesia.

Compassion in Action:  Stop the Traffic launched this past weekend with six screenings of  the documentary “At the End of Slavery.” The launch continues through this weekend with the giving away of $50,000.   Groups will be asked to return the funds they have raised to RockPointe in mid-June and proceeds of fundraising efforts will go to fund projects in Ukraine, Cambodia, Ethiopia, Costa Rica and Calgary.
