Human Trafficking is a complex problem and has many causes.  The primary causes are:

  • Extreme poverty, especially among women and girls
  • A lack of political, social and economical stability which leads to people becoming refugees
  • A lack of reasonable and realistic prospects
  • Situations of armed conflict and oppression
  • Domestic violence and disintegration of the family structure
  • Gender discrimination
  • Lack of access to education and information
  • HIV/AIDS

In Canada the primary causes of human trafficking include:

  • insufficient police resources
  • an almost complete lack of institutional help and support for victims
  • a social norm that allows a child to have consented sex by 16 and invovled in prostitution by 18

The root causes of Human Trafficking are not being adequately addressed here in Canada or around the world.

Compassion in Action has partnered with five organizations in five Human Trafficking hot spots around the world and understand the causes of trafficking. Our partners are working on both sides of the problem,

  • the preventative side by working with those who are at high risk of becoming vicitims and
  • on the rescue, rehabilitation and reintegration side with those who are already victims of human trafficking
